Historical Information

As a result of the spiritual awakening led by Henry Alline, a place of worship known as “New Light Meeting House” was established between 1775 and 1780 near what is now Centrelea United Baptist Church. This is believed to have been the foundation of the church body at Centrelea. During that time Thomas Handley Chipman, upon recommendation by Henry Alline and Nicholas Pierson, was ordained and became the first pastor of “Messenger Settlement (Centrelea)”. Extensive renovations have been made to the building since its construction in 1853.
