Historical Information

Allen Gibson’s “Churches by the Sea” indicates that the Rev. Richard Cunningham was the pioneer of Baptist work in the Port Lorne area. Cunningham became the pastor at nearby Chute’s Cove, a community known as Hampton today. In the wake of a revival, a fellowship was organized in 1835 and given the name Wilmot Mountain Baptist Church. In 1835 a place of worship opened near the mountain crest and was named Mount Rose. The structure was built in a meetinghouse style.
