Historical Information

This church is part of the Westchester-Wentworth Pastorate containing four churches – Millvale, Westchester, Wentworth, and Central New Annan Baptist Churches.

The congregation of Central New Annan dates to 1848. Its first minister was Rev. D. W. Dimock. In 1850 there were 15 members of the congregation.

The first church was built circa 1848, and later burned down between 1896 and 1898. This original church building was in Tatamagouche mountain.  J. D. Dimock was ordained in 1896 and preached at the church for 10 years, leaving in 1904.

The present church building (2022) was completed in 1899, on land donated by Robert Wilson in Central New Annan. The church was debt-free throughout all the building endeavours. Local builders came together to construct the current church; they gave both labour and lumber. Masonry for the structure was donated by William Swan (chimney and foundation). The church has a vaulted ceiling, original to the structure.

The church was renovated in 1995, including a new poured cement foundation, and an oil furnace which replaced a propane heat source. The church has vinyl siding on the walls and green steel on the roof of the church. The church has maintained many of its original interior features, including the stationary straight-back pews. In 2013, on either side of the pulpit a level platform was added to extend the usable space for plays. Prior to this there was just a smaller stage situated centrally in the front (rear of church structure).  The church has never had stained glass windows, just clear glass in the Gothic Revival style windows. The spire on top of the tower has had to be replaced a couple of times due to rot and age.

This church was constructed with hints of the Gothic Revival style, common for its period. Some of the most eye-catching features of the building are the Gothic Revival style windows and the three-bay facade of the gable end with its centrally placed steeple extending beyond the primary gable end wall.
