Historical Information

A local history of the Mount Hanley Church indicates that as early as 1813, Baptists were traveling from Mount Hanley to Nictaux to worship. Allen Gibson, in “Churches by the Sea”, claims that as early as 1809 there were Baptists on Mount Hanley. Later in 1828 Rev. I.E. Bill became pastor of the Nictaux Church. While at Nictaux, Rev. Bill also served the congregation at Mount Hanley in the Methodist Chapel. Rev. Bill denied Methodist doctrines, which ultimately lead to his dismissal from preaching in the church building; however, the church at Mount Hanley continued in the homes of congregants. It was not until one year after Rev. Bill had been in Mount Hanley that the church was able to finally build a rough structure.
The current structure, built in 1861 by Arthur H. Barteaux and Ingraham H. Brown, was extensively remodeled in 1889. In 1914, Mount Hanley was organized into a separate field (from Middleton), which also included Moshers Corner and Port George. By 1994 the Mount Hanley church was on its own. In June of 1996 Rev. Robert Billings became the pastor and served until his death on October 23, 2009. After a period with interim ministers, Convention Lay Pastors Ron and Karen Purdy provided pastoral leadership until October 23, 2011. The building was later sold and has since become a private dwelling.
