Historical Information

The chapel at East Green Harbour was also referred to as the “Church in the Wildwood.” It was built at the direction of Captain John Collin Williams and was gifted to the “Right Baptist Denomination” in his will in 1883. Rev. John F. McKenne was the first minister to preach in this petite chapel.

The construction was fueled by the lifelong desire of Williams to build a chapel. He often went sailing and when he would discuss this desire with people, they would often donate funds for the chapel’s construction. Services were held regularly here, and all Christian denominations were welcome to use the structure.

Architecturally this church was a small wood frame structure with a steep gable roof, with return eaves. There were two gothic windows on either side and a wagon-wheel (medallion) window near the peak on the gable end. Inside there was a single aisle with seating on either side of the sanctuary. Over time, with declining membership in the area and neglect the building fell into disrepair.
