Historical Information

In 1855, due to a growing congregation at Locke’s Island the parishioners decided to replace the old Meeting House on Meeting House Point with this larger place of worship.

Workers involved in the construction efforts included Johnathan Locke, Jacob Locke, Joshua Chadsey and William Collins. The building progressed very slowly due to lack of funds, dedication, and able-bodied members to assist in the construction efforts.

During the years of construction, the church was going without regular services and a regular minister, until 1856 when Rev. William Hobbs came to the pastorate and stayed until 1858. In 1856, Hobbs was made the regular pastor for the charge, including Louis Head, Hayden’s Point (now Osborne), and Locke’s Island.

This building was finished November of 1858 with Rev. Samuel Boothby officiating. Later, in 1878 with a still growing congregation it was decided to build a larger and more commodious structure for the congregation.

This is the only known photo of this church when it was located on Church Street. Although obscured by other buildings, we can tell it has a steeple on the gable end, and a steeply pitched roof. Inside there was believed to have been two stories with viewing galleries inside. This is typical for its time in terms of its Gothic Revival style. Gothic arched windows are visible on the right side of the structure. Building materials was often repurposed in the nineteenth century. Many boards and finishes were likely rehoused in the current Lockeport United Baptist Church, which is located on Spruce Street.
