Historical Information

On February 11, 1954 Baptist residents of Riverview met in a school auditorium to discuss establishing a church building.

On June 2, 1954 the meeting to organize the Riverview Heights United Baptist Church was held. The name was later changed to Riverview United Baptist Church in 1975.

At the end of 1954 the Home Mission Board bought land in a central Riverview location. In 1956 the church building had been erected but only the basement was suitable for holding services. Much of the work was done by the members. The church was dedicated May 11, 1958.

The Middle Coverdale United Baptist Church expressed a desire to unite with the Riverview Church and 16 new members were added on February 12, 1961. In 1962 it was decided to add a Christian Education Centre, and a sod turning ceremony was held October 11. Dedication of the Centre was held February 10, 1963.

In 2018, a proposal was put forward for the Riverview Baptist Church to join the Journey Church. The motion was passed in June 2018 and Riverview Baptist Church became the third location of the multi-site Journey Church.

Historical Information

In 1961, Brentwood United Baptist Church was formed. On January 25, 1966, the church building at the corner of Bessborough and Dickson Boulevard was dedicated. The men of the congregation completed much of the work themselves.

Over the years, membership fluctuated with a peak in 2000. From then onwards, numbers steadily dwindled. In 2003, efforts were made to modernize the sanctuary in order to attract a younger demographic, but numbers continued to fall. In 2007, conversations with Allison Baptist were in motion about the possibility of Brentwood becoming a second location.

In 2008, Brentwood United Baptist Church became a satellite of Allison Baptist. In 2013, the multi-site church was renamed The Journey Church and now has three campuses: Allison, Brentwood, and Riverview.

Historical Information

The Baptist work in the west of Moncton began under the guidance of the Salisbury United Baptist Church. Meetings were held in the old schoolhouse at Sand Hill. On October 23, 1892 a house of worship was dedicated at Allison. This body of believers remained a part of the Salisbury church until May 14, 1919 when twenty-two people organized the Allison United Baptist Church.

For many years the church was on a multiple pastoral charge. In 1958 the church became self-supporting with its own pastor. The church building was enlarged in 1983 with a Christian Education wing.

In the mid-1990s an expansion project was completed, allowing space for 350 people in each service. By 2006, weekly attendance was edging steadily towards capacity. By 2008, more than 600 people were attending the three services offered.

That same year, in order to create space for a rapidly growing congregation, Allison Baptist Church began operating as a multi-site ministry with a campus in the Brentwood Baptist Church building.

By 2013 the church was renamed Journey Church and now has three sites: Allison, Brentwood, and Riverview.

Historical Information

As the city of Moncton grew toward the west, a group of Baptists, who had connections with several city churches and had moved to the new area, met in 1954 to consider the need for a church along Salisbury Road. On January 14, 1955, the Salisbury Road United Baptist Church was formed.

In 1956, a building was constructed under the direction of Winston Steeves of Modern Construction, with the membership providing most of the labour. In 1966, the church completed a Christian Education wing and expanded the auditorium to meet the needs of a growing congregation.

In 1969, the Salisbury Road United Baptist Church became Uplands United Baptist Church, and has since become Uplands Baptist Church.

If you have updated information on Uplands Baptist Church, please get in touch using this form.

Historical Information

In 1956, First Baptist Church conducted a survey of the north west area of Moncton and found sufficient support and enthusiasm to warrant the founding of a new Baptist congregation. 43 people indicated their willingness to be members and on December 3, 1957, the church was organized with 56 charter members.

The first meetings were held in the building which had been constructed as a parsonage, but the numbers soon grew to the point where the congregation had to meet in the auditorium of the Queen Elizabeth School.

Construction of the new church building started on June 30, 1958 and the basement was ready to hold services by October. The dedication service of the new building was on December 7, 1958. The church built a Christian Education Centre in 1974.

If you have updated information on West Lane Baptist Church, please get in touch using this form.

Historical Information

The alleged first Baptist congregation in Canada was planted in Middle Sackville near Morice's Mill Pond, now Silver Lake, in 1763 upon the arrival of 13 Baptist settlers from Swansea, Massachusetts. Although most of these settlers returned to Massachusetts in 1771, and the congregation struggled for several years, the church was reconstituted by Joseph Crandall in 1798.

Records indicate that a Meeting House was being used by 1809 — followed by Bethel (1842) and Beulah (1844) chapels. Over the years, other Baptist churches were built or supported in the vicinity, one being Salem Chapel (1849) in the lower town which grew to become the Main Street Baptist Church (built 1890). They in turn planted Wood Point (1878). Midgic Church was planted by Middle Sackville in 1859.

After many congregational re-organizations, the large field was divided in 1902. The Middle Sackville Baptist congregation was intended for Baptists living north of Ogden Mill Road, while those living south of this point were connected to Main Street Baptist. These were guidelines only, and overlap has always been the norm. Middle Sackville built the current building in 1905 and expanded it to include classrooms and a gym in 1995. Today, the congregation is known locally as "The Church by the Lake."

Historical Information

In early 1921, forty-three members from Lewisville Baptist Church joined twenty other residents from Sunny Brae to form a new congregation.

Two lots were secured and deeded to the trustees of Lewisville Baptist since there was no official church organized in Sunny Brae at the time. The St. Paul Episcopal Church building at the corner of Botsford and Victoria Streets was donated, along with the pews, bell, organ, etc. on the condition that the Sunny Brae congregation would remove the building as soon as possible. The building was taken down, and the lumber and interior elements were stored for later use.

In September 1921, the church was formally organized. In this same year, the former cornerstone of St. Paul’s church was laid as the cornerstone of the new Sunny Brae church building.

The auditorium wasn’t complete until 1925. The construction work was undertaken by Simon Steeves and the interior decoration was completed by C. Andrew Blakney.

On October 21, 1925 the church was dedicated. The organ used for the service was assembled from parts of two organs that were donated by Highfield Church and St Paul’s church. Several more items were donated by members including doors; twin stained-glass windows; a pulpit reading lamp; gothic hymn boards; mahogany offering pockets; a pulpit Bible, chair, and hymn book; installation of lights, a rug; communion set and table; bulletin boards.

The church was partially destroyed by fire in early 1927 and repairs were made. In October 1946 more repairs were made, including the redecoration of the auditorium. In November, it was decided to divide the basement into classrooms for Sunday School. In 1951 extensive work was done on the heating system and a Hammond electric organ was installed. In May 1953 the auditorium was redecorated once again.

In 1958 an addition was built including an enlarged auditorium, fifteen classrooms, kitchen facilities, a pastor’s study, and a supply room. This new addition was dedicated in March 1959.

In 1967 the sanctuary was redecorated in yellow and gold, including gold carpets. New pews were also installed, 23 of which were donated in memory of departed loved ones. A new organ was dedicated on November 4, 1972, during the 50th anniversary weekend. In 1976, a heater was installed in the baptistry and the auditorium rewired. That same year, the PA system and slide projectors were replaced after being stolen. That same year, the following improvements were made: enlarged parking lot, new heaters on the church roof, aluminum windows installed throughout, renovation of the basement, new washrooms, enlarged kitchen, and added nursery.

A further expansion of Sunny Brae Baptist Church was completed in 1990.

If you have any updated information on changes to the Sunny Brae Baptist Church building from 1990-present, please get in touch using this form.

The Baptist of 'Creek Village' or Lewisville, trace their roots to the fellowship of Baptists founded in 1828. On March 15, 1853, a group still meeting in the Free Meeting House decided to build a mission house in the Lewisville area.

The Lewisville Baptist Church became an autonomous church body in 1905 when First Baptist Church agreed to dismiss 104 members for the purpose of organizing the new church. In the same meeting, it was decided to transfer the Cherryfield property from First Baptist to the new Lewisville church. The association of Cherryfield and Lewisville continued until 1963.

The Lewisville church building was renovated and enlarged in 1906. In 1962 a Youth Centre was added, and a further extension was completed in the 1990s.

Lewisville is undertaking an extensive building project in 2021 to further modernise and expand its facilities.

If you have any updated information about Lewisville Baptist Church, please get in touch using this form.

The Baptist work in Cherryfield begain in 1880 when George T. Shaw conducted a survey on behalf of First Baptist Church. A mission house was erected in 1888. Farmers supplied the logs for lumber, First Baptist provided the pews and organ, and the people of Lewisville donated the lamps.

By January 1894, the deacons of First Baptist Church were holding regular Sunday evening services in the mission house. In 1903, Rev. Ira M. Baird was called to First Baptist to be the assistant and to minister in Cherryield and Lewisville.

In 1905, when Lewisville organized as a separate congregation, the 104 members of the new church asked that the Cherryfield property be included in the transfer. Cherryfield chose a deacon and trustee and was joined in a pastoral charge with Lewisville. For many years the church building was shared on alternateSundays with the United Church.

Cherryfield called its own pastor in 1987 and has evolved over the years to reflect the growth of the Moncton population to the north.

If you have any updated information on this church, please get in touch using this form.

Historical Information

The Moncton Free Christian Baptist Church was organized in 1877 in the Free Meeting House. In 1882, a lot was purchased on the corner of St George and Highfield. The original church building was a wood structure and provided seating for five hundred. It was completed in July and dedicated in September 1883. Between 1895 and 1899, extensive renovations and much-needed repairs were made, including redecorating the worship room. Following the Baptist union, the church was renamed ‘West End United Baptist Church.’

Sometime after 1904, the church building was deemed too small for the congregation’s needs. Plans were made to enlarge the structure by raising the building six feet and digging a basement beneath the auditorium. New entrances were provided in the front and the back was extended to make space for a choir. In its newly enlarged stage, the auditorium could seat seven hundred.

In 1909 the West End United Baptist Church changed its name to Highfield Street United Baptist Church. Due to rapid growth, it was decided to tear down the original church structure to make way for a larger building. The church was designed by architect Leslie G. Fairn of Aylesford, Nova Scotia. It was built by Rhodes Curry Company of Amherst, Nova Scotia between 1922 and 1923, and was dedicated on May 13, 1923.

The use of orange brick, contrasting light-coloured quoins and trim and a prominent bell tower ensured its place as an irreplaceable feature of the St. George Street streetscape. The use of Gothic tracery, gable pediments and parapets contrast the smooth contours of Roman arch openings and also help to break up the brick wall construction. The coffer panelled education room on the south side can be opened to expand the seating capacity and to allow extra natural light in through its clearstory windows.

In 1925 a Casavant organ was installed, rumoured at the time to be the largest two manual organ in the country. In 1926, extensive repairs were made to the exterior wall and tower of the church. Soon after the close of World War II a large-stained glass window was installed in memory of those lost in both World War I and II.

In 1953, the Youth Centre was added to the north side of the building. The accurate reproduction of detail by Modern Construction Company created a seamless integration with the existing structure. The Sands property on Fleet Street was purchased to provide fire exits in order to comply with fire regulations.

In 1963, the Fleet Street house was torn down to make way for a parking lot. Extensive repairs and improvements were made to the church property including the addition of a modern nursery, a heating system for the church basement, major repairs to the exterior walls, extensive interior redecoration, the purchase of new hymnals, laying new carpets throughout the auditorium, and the refurbishment of the ladies’ parlour.

In two phases beginning in 1963, the basement beneath the auditorium was completely renovated, making way for a chapel, memorial and women’s ministry rooms, and a spacious nursery. New floor covering was laid in the auditorium and overflow, and work done in the classrooms.

In 1976, plans were made to significantly remodel the auditorium, including lowering the choir area, building a new platform and baptistry, remodelling the organ, installing new carpet, and repainting.

Highfield Street United Baptist Church is now known as Highfield Baptist Church. In 2005 the building was designated a Local Historic Place for its unique blend of English Gothic and Greek architectural designs. It is also recognized for being one of Moncton’s oldest religious organizations.
