<text>The Amazing Grace Baptist Church was formed in 1990, under the leadership of Mike Bartoe of McArthur, Ohio. Once the congregation was well established Pastor Bartoe left the congregation in 1996. The original structure that this congregation used was once a diner called “Burger Delight,” just outside of Bridgetown. This building was built in the mid twentieth century between 1975 and 1985, however, the exact date is unknown. The diner went out of business and was soon after purchased by the congregation in 1990. The congregation was later incorporated in 1991. This building is situated lengthways to the road and is the size and shape of a modular home. This original building that the congregation used has a low-pitched brown steel roof with white vinyl siding on the façade. The building appears to have an addition on the side facing the road, containing the main entrance into the building. With this addition the building is now in the shape of an “L.” There are four windows on the building, all of which are vinyl. The most eye-catching feature of this building is the wooden cross, attached to the structure, containing the name of the church. The new structure (built 2014) was originally built by the congregation to house their “Old Fashioned Bluenose Camp meeting,” an event that brings together independent Baptist congregations from across the province. It is now the main facility that the congregation uses. This building was originally designed in the style of a barn, with tall ceilings and unfinished walls. Now that it is the main church, it has been completely finished inside and has white and blue steel on the roof and brown steel on the exterior walls. Photos of the interior are of the building built in 2014. This church is an independent Baptist church. <br /><br />Information provided by the church.</text>

<text>The early members from this former congregation can trace their roots back to First Baptist Church, Amherst, who worked in several neighboring areas, one of which was Amherst Highlands. Here, a mission grew around a Sunday school program which began in the 1890’s through the efforts of some “devoted sisters.”

The first meetings of the Amherst Highland United Baptist Church were held in private homes, and later, the little group used a small building owned by the town, which happened to be used, on occasion, as an isolation ward for people in the region suffering from infectious diseases.

From this small building owned by the town, the mission moved about 100 feet down the road to the north. This new building has a central hallway, with a room on either side and a large platform at the south end, in the front of the sanctuary. This building was formerly used as a Society’s Lodge Hall, until it was taken over by the Highland Sunday School. No date of construction can be found for this building; however, given its architectural style and embellishments, it is believed it was built circa 1890, as it marks a transitional shift in architectural styles, from a building that has a centrally placed tower on the gable end, to a design that is asymmetrical, with the tower positioned in the interior corner of the ell of the building.

The first changes the congregation made, once taking over this building, occurred in 1906, when a set of stairs, and a room were built for the boys’ Sunday School class, completed by Deacon Wylie Doncaster.

The Sunday School was organized in 1894, and was still a ministry in 1912 when a First Baptist Church, Amherst report acknowledged the associated schools at the Highlands, at Amherst Point, at East Amherst, and at Salem. This church continued this Sunday School until the 1970’s. Around 1980 the building was sold to the Amherst Day Care Centre.

Originally this building was a pleasant blend of Gothic Revival and Classical Styles, evident through the uses of Gothic Revival pointed windows near the peaks of the gables, and the use of large rectangular windows below the eaves. One of the most striking features of this structure, that still exists in present (2023) day, is that of the tower, which contains the main entrance of the building. This building, however, lacks many of its original architectural embellishments both on the interior and exterior, due to renovations by all the various groups that have been housed in this building. It is interesting to note that this building, since its construction, appears to have housed some type of community organization aimed at helping to educate people.

<text>The congregation of the Amherst Open Bible Baptist Church first began in the home of Miles Foster, with prayer meetings, in 1974. It is here they began to identify themselves as a congregation, separate from other Baptist churches in the area. It is said that many Baptist churches banded together to support and help the church begin, donating time and resources towards the formation of a congregation and church structure. From there the first business meeting was held Feb 26, 1978, at the R. B. Dickey schoolhouse. Prior to this first meeting the congregation did not have a minister and primarily just had Bible studies and not regular services. At the meeting held on February 26, the congregation unanimously decided to call their first pastor, Barry Beebe. After the congregation moved out of the home of Miles Foster, the congregation rented various places for awhile and in 1979 began working on their current building. However, it was not until 1980 that the AOBBC moved in and they have been in this location until the present (2021).

The church structure is atypical for its time, in terms of style. It is a one-and-a-half storey wood frame construction with a medium pitched roof. Rather than the entrance being on the gable end, like most Maritime churches, it is on the side, at ground level. Inside the church, to go to the sanctuary, you must walk up stairs. The building has visible architectural detailings that were popular in the mid- to late-twentieth century, those being the stripes of decorative siding between the upper storey windows and the basement windows.

<text>The Amherst Point Baptist Church, built in 1853, is a modest, wooden, one-storey country church built in the form of the traditional Meeting House. The church sits amid mature trees on the western outskirts of Amherst, Nova Scotia, on its original site with its ungabled side facing
the road. It is near the dykelands of the Tantramar Marshes and is backed by a Provincial Bird Sanctuary.

The value of the Amherst Point Baptist Church is found in its association with prominent Cumberland County individuals, and in its being an excellent example of a country Baptist Church built in the Meeting House tradition, with Classical Revival and Gothic Revival
elements.

Historical Value
The Reverend Dr. David Allan Steele and the Reverend Charles Tupper were two of the serving pastors in the Amherst Point Baptist Church. Steele was well-known for his strong oratory style, and was highly respected in Cumberland County as a community leader of great intelligence and tolerance who inspired others to follow his example. Tupper was a highly-regarded minister, writer, and advocate of temperance and education who helped establish Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia. Tupper was also the father of Sir Charles Tupper, a local doctor and politician who was a Father of Confederation and a Prime Minister of Canada.

Architectural Value
The Amherst Point Baptist Church is representative of many rural, Protestant churches built in Cumberland County in the mid to late nineteenth century. It is a wooden, symmetrical, Meeting House style building with a medium-pitched roof, pedimented gables, and simple ornamentation. The characteristic symmetry is evident in the church’s two-bay façade and the three large, rectangular windows that line each side of the boxy church. Its Classical Revival temple-like
architecture is adorned with a wide frieze, and heavy, prominent pilasters framing the two entries and acting as corner boards. Also of note are prominent labels crowning each side window, and
triangular openings in the gables, the front one being a window decorated with diamond-shaped tracery. The Gothic Revival triangular shape of these gable openings is echoed in the pointed
arch above the two entries, and the upper edges of these triangles are accentuated with scalloped bargeboard.

<text>The Antigonish Baptist Church is an Independent Fundamental Baptist Church, not associated with the Canadian Baptists of Atlantic Canada (CBAC). It is the only Baptist church in the town of Antigonish. The building is ideally positioned on a back road, just off the main road through Antigonish, and has many vantage points for people to see while driving by.

This building has a medium pitched roof, much like those found on many other Baptist churches from this era. Given the age of the other buildings on the street, along with the architectural detailings of the church building, it is believed it was built between 1970 and 1990. The building is set up high on a hill, visible by traffic from three directions. The front of the building faces the corner of its road, visible to people driving up to it. The front of the building has a one-bay façade, with a centrally placed doorway and deck set up off the ground. Along each side of the building there are three windows for the sanctuary and three basement windows for a kitchen and recreational room. On the back of the building there is an exterior entrance for the basement and stainless steel letters attached to the façade that read “Antigonish Baptist Church.” This building has a cream-colored siding, a brown painted foundation, and brown shingles, all of which are believed to be original to the building.

The exterior of this building contains little to no architectural details on it. This is partly due to its age, design, and the fact that it is covered with vinyl siding. It is believed that this congregation formed on their own, without assistance from another Baptist congregation in the region. The most eye-catching feature of this building is the sign located on the back façade.

<text>Apple River United Baptist Church was formed in 1908, the same year they constructed this church building. The church is typical for its time in terms of size and style, and is a prime example in a shift in Atlantic Baptist architecture during the early part of the twentieth century. This shift in style moved away from a typical symmetrical church design, usually with the tower centrally placed on the gable end. This church has the tower located on the corner of the gable end and eave-side of the building, with the main entrance located in this part of the structure.

The church appears to still maintain many of its original architectural features on the exterior of the building, including ornate eyebrow trim on the windows, and gingerbread mouldings at the top of the tower, near the peak of the four-sided steeple. The majority of the building, however, is covered in white vinyl siding, and the roof in black asphalt shingles, both materials not original to the building’s construction.

Some of the most striking features of this building are the large, gothic stained-glass window centrally placed on the gable end, the small square window on the front facade near the peak, and the four, one-over-one rectangular windows found on each of the eave-side of the structure. The building appears to have a side door that was added later, and contains a wheelchair ramp, on the left eave-side of the building.

The placement of this building is on a country road, somewhat near the road, with houses about the same age surrounding it.

<text><p>The Argyle Historic Baptist Church and Cemetery are located on a hill easily viewed from Highway 103 at Frost Corner, Argyle, on the south shore of Nova Scotia. The present church was the third church built on this site, and was built between 1877 and 1887. The cemetery was established in 1776 and was used until 1891. The church since 2008 has been registered as a Provincial Heritage Property in Nova Scotia.</p>
<p>The Argyle Historic Baptist Church and Cemetery is valued for its association with the settlement of New England Planters in Argyle Township; as one of the earliest cemeteries in the area; and for its association with Reverend John Frost.</p>
<p>The history of this congregation goes back to the settlement of the Argyle area by New England Planters in the 1760s. Although the date is unknown, a Congregationalist Meeting House was erected on this site soon after initial settlement; most likely under the direction of Reverend John Frost, the first Protestant minister ordained in what is now Canada. Frost, as well as the evangelist Henry Alline, preached in this meeting house.</p>
<p>Frost served the congregation until his death and is buried in the adjoining cemetery. In 1782, Henry Alline's preaching resulted in the formation of three "Gospel Churches" on the south shore, one of which was at Argyle, which was the first Protestant church established in Argyle.</p>
<p>In 1806, a second "great awakening" swept western Nova Scotia; the Reverend Enoch Towner's preaching brought it to Argyle and he formed a Baptist church with 150 members. As a result, a new building was erected on the same site. This structure burned in 1865 and the present church, built on the same site, was opened for worship in 1877; however, construction was not completed until 1887. It remained in use until 1975. In 1985, the Glenwood and Argyle Women's Institute undertook restoration and maintenance of the Argyle Historical Baptist Church as the oldest surviving Protestant Church in Argyle.</p>
<p>The adjoining cemetery was established in the 1760s and was used until 1891, when a new cemetery was started nearby. The church building is no longer used for religious services; however, it is open to the public during the summer months for tours.</p>
<p>Greek Revival in style, the Argyle Historic Baptist Church was designed by Yarmouth County architect, James Kinney. It was constructed on the front gable or temple plan, with a steeply pitched gable roof. The front tower has a central double door and long curved Gothic Revival style windows. The decorative Classical corner-boards are designed to resemble twin pillars extending up to the cornice. Originally there was a large spire that was used by fishermen as a navigational landmark. It was removed in the 1930s and replaced by the present tower.</p>

<text>Founded in April of 1995 by Pastor Walter Lawrence of Pennsylvania, Arichat Bible Church is an independent Baptist church in Isle Madame, Cape Breton. The congregation of this church in the first few years of their congregation met in houses of the parishioners. Soon after they came to the realization that they needed a larger, more accommodating space that could be designated for services.

For roughly ten years the congregation rented a space, directly across the road from where they currently meet. This space is now a café. Since around 1998, the congregation has been meeting in the present building (2021), a space which they rent. This building was built circa 1850, and its original purpose was a general store. Prior to renovations when the congregation moved in, the building maintained many of its original interior architectural features, such as a tin ceiling and ornate trim boards. This building is in the New England Colonial style characterized by its ‘boxy’ appearance, steeply pitched roof and a three-bay façade with a centrally placed doorway. This architectural style was common around 1850. This building has an evident addition to the left side of the structure, appearing to be a stairwell leading to the second floor.

Many of the original architectural features of this building are no longer there, having been removed during renovations. The building now has black asphalt shingles on the roof, brown vinyl siding on the exterior walls, and white vinyl windows.

<text>In the words of M. Allen Gibson, from his column 'Churches by the Sea', “On the crest of the North Mountain, the United Baptist Church at Arlington occupies a site commanding a magnificent view of the (Annapolis) Valley and the Minas Basin.” Long before there was a building on the site, pastoral care was provided to Arlington by pastors serving at the Baptist churches in Canning or Pereaux.

In August 1931, the Adventist Church building from Scot's Bay was moved to the present location and reconstructed, giving the Arlington congregation a home for worship. In about 1954 a tower and belfry were added. In 1980, a vestry was added to the church building, and in 1988 a front entrance was added. In 2012 there was a fire in the vestry of the church, resulting in a complete renovation of the vestry, which suffered extensive smoke and water damage; the sanctuary, already in the middle of renovations, had to be repainted and restored. As part of the renovations, 'new' pews were installed in the sanctuary. The pews were donated by Trinity United Church, Canning, after that church closed following the restructuring of the United Church of Canada in Kings County. The pews, made of black oak, were cut and refinished to fit the Arlington sanctuary. Many other upgrades were completed, including the installation of new carpeting, the removal of the oil furnace and installation of heat pumps and electric heating. Two decorative back-lit glass panels, designed and created by glass artist Pamela Kinsman, were installed on the front wall of the sanctuary.

Most recently, the aging spruce trees around the church building were removed, restoring the magnificent view mentioned by M. Allen Gibson.

For some years, the congregation continued to be served by pastors from Canning or Pereaux. In 1953 The Rev. Dr. Charles Taylor registered the church with the Nova Scotia government as an independent congregation, and in June of that year, the congregation was welcomed into the Central Association of Baptist Churches, now known as the Eastern Valley Baptist Association.

Until 1985, Scott's Bay and Arlington churches shared the same pastor, many of them students from near by Acadia University. Now both churches call their pastors independently. The congregation of Arlington United Baptist Church has traditionally been small, but has always served faithfully, and welcomed all who have come to worship here. The present pastor is the Rev Sarah Scott.</text>

              <text><p>Armond Church was a one-room structure built in 1897.</p>
<p>In 2008 it was purchased from the Armond Community group by the Knowlesville Art &amp; Nature Centre and moved down the road to South Knowlesville.</p>
<p>The initial renovations to revitalize the old building were completed in November 2008 and a small preschool opened to service families in the area. In the last decade, the Knowlesville Art &amp; Nature Centre has expanded to include many community programmes and learning opportunities for all ages.</p>
