<text>The Head of Millstream Baptist Church was organized in 1859; later that year they constructed this church facility. This building is built in the Meeting House style, which was typical of Baptist congregations around this time frame in Atlantic Canada. The Meeting House style is characterized by a 1 ½ storey wood-frame construction, with either one or two entranceways located on the gable end. One can tell a lot about the beliefs of a congregation by examining their architecture. Often when there are two doors, one located on each side of the front facade, one door was used by the men, and the other by the women.

This church is rather plain and lacks architectural details that are usually found on churches of this period and style. This could be due to the application of vinyl siding to the exterior, which is not original to the facility. The building features a front entrance centrally placed on the gable end, with three, large, gothic windows, on each of the eave-sides of the building. Perhaps this building was initially used as a union church, since a union cemetery surrounds the church.

This church was formerly part of the Millstream United Baptist Pastorate, which initially included Keirstead Mountain Baptist Church, Head of Millstream United Baptist Church, Snider Mountain Baptist Church, Collina United Baptist Church, and formerly Lower Millstream, prior to it being sold. Now this pastorate contains only Keirstead Mountain Baptist Church and the Head of Millstream United Baptist Church (2023).

<text>The former Advocate Baptist Church in Advocate Harbour, Cumberland County, was built in the 1880s. After ceasing to be an active church in 2015 and being deconsecrated the same year, the building was purchased by Greg Morris, a contractor, who transformed its church hall into a restaurant called the Old Church Café. The building is typical for its time in terms of style, and has immense historical and architectural significance due to the amount of untouched wood detailings inside, and architectural embellishments still present inside, such as the original pews and pulpit. This structure is a centrally placed tower on the gable end, and is in the Gothic Revival style, evident in the detailings found both in the straight pointed windows, and the wood details inside.

Morris, along with John Grant, restored the building extensively, addressing issues such as a leaky roof and upgrading the electrical system to meet code requirements. While the church hall was converted into a restaurant, the original sanctuary remains intact, featuring wooden pews, stained glass windows, a piano, and a pump organ dating back to 1901. The sanctuary has been preserved for potential wedding ceremonies or funerals, as it holds sentimental value for members of the community with ties to the former congregation.

The Old Church Café opened its doors in the summer of 2017 and operates approximately three days a week. Overall, the community has responded positively to the church finding a new purpose as a restaurant, although some individuals expressed discontent about the establishment obtaining a liquor license, emphasizing the shift from its previous religious function.

Having reached a point in their lives where they feel it's time for someone else to take over, Morris and Grant are currently seeking a buyer for the church and café. The property was listed for sale in 2022. He has received interest in the property but wishes to ensure the buyer appreciates the historical significance of the building. Morris expressed concern about potential buyers wanting to strip the interior items for sale, emphasizing his desire to preserve the church's history rather than see it demolished.

            <elementText elementTextId="2763">
<text><p>From early in the days of settlement of Chester Basin, there was a building situated where the church now stands, from which David Crandall distributed rations. Subsequently, he gave the place for use as a church, school, and temperance hall. The building was renovated and became known as Aenon Chapel. This was likely a meeting house that was either non-denominational or referred to as a “Union Church,” which was a building that was used by congregations of numerous Protestant faiths.</p>
<p>The chapel was replaced by the first Baptist church in 1821. This Baptist church is described as having had a wide aisle that extended through the centre of the building and seats that went to the walls on both sides. There was a high pulpit with the choir seated to the right of the minister. This building was also likely in the meeting house style, a common style among Baptists in early to mid ninetieth century Atlantic Canada. This style is often characterized by its small and rather plain facility, with no steeple, and gothic embellishments. The front entrance was often on the gable end, with either two entrances one on the left and right sides of the front façade; one meant for the men and the other for women, or a centrally placed doorway. This building likely only had one entrance centrally placed on the gable end, given that there is only one interior aisle and not two. This style focuses on proportion and symmetry. Given the style of other meeting houses from this period and the description of the interior, it is likely that this Baptist congregation had Congregationalist beginnings and was perhaps founded by Dissenter populations that left the Church of England. It was common for churches built by these populations to have high-set pulpits that were well shut in. The style of this building, given its age, was probably rather plain, and would have had simple classical colonial or classical embellishments such as rectangular windows and strait back pews.</p>
<p>Rev. M . B . Whitman became the first resident minister at Aenon. Mr. Whitman led in the building of a parsonage which was completed in 1902 and from which all indebtedness had been paid off by 1905. The fourth minister to serve the congregation was Rev. Samuel A. Macdougall during whose term of service the present place of worship was built on the same property as had been occupied by its predecessor, the old being razed on October 3rd, 1910. The reasoning for constructing a new facility was likely due to the growing size of the congregation. The cost of the new church was in the vicinity of $9000. The new building was dedicated on November 17th, 1911. This building is a prime example of the movement Atlantic Baptist congregations were making in the early twentieth century from symmetrical designs, typically in the gothic revival style with a steeple centrally placed on the gable end, to a style that was in an asymmetrical design, with that steeple situated on the left side of the building.</p>
<p>The bell was installed two years after the dedication, in 1913. Lockland Croft, chairman of the bell committee, had gone to Halifax to order a bell. When the Company learned that the bell was for the new church in Chester Basin, the manager said, "The bell is paid for! I’m donating it!"</p></text>

<text>In 1829, congregants from Nictaux and Paradise, led by Rev I.E. Bill and Rev. Thomas Ansley, organized a Baptist Church in New Albany. The church evolved from being held in homes to the local schoolhouse, which later burned down. The New Albany Baptist Church deed describes the purchase of one half-acre of land for the price of 21 dollars in December 16, 1878. This site has been identified as the home of Beriah Bent, where early evangelical meetings were first held. Local resources were used to build the church, such as beams from Adolphus Farm Mill. In May of 1877 the church was dedicated. Until 1910, New Albany was part of a field including: East Dalhousie, Falkland Ridge, and Springfield. In 1915 New Albany became attached to the Lawrencetown pastorate. In the concluding decade of the twentieth century the building became the home of “The Albany Community Church,” and on December 20, 1994 the property was registered as a “Municipal Heritage Property” by the Municipality of Annapolis County.<br /><br /><p>Originally called the New Albany Baptist Church, construction of the Albany Community Church began in 1875 and was dedicated on May 20th, 1877. The church beautifully demonstrates a transitional phase in Nova Scotia Baptist architecture between the early 19th century meeting houses and the late 19th century church buildings. The meeting house style is indicated in the overall form of a simple gable roof with double entranceways while the pointed arches, with shouldered architraves, of the window and door frames herald a Gothic Revival Style. Often when there are two entrances on a church of this style it means that one of the doors was usually meant for the men and the other for the women; once inside they were expected to sit on opposite sides of the church.</p>

<text>The Alberton congregation dates back to the mid-nineteenth century, when it was part of the O’Leary pastorate, which was founded by Reverenced Malcom Ross in 1852. By the 1880’s the congregation in Alberton had their own building and were a thriving congregation. However, in 1947, the congregation disbanded and closed their church.

For many years there was no Convention Baptist church to serve the Alberton people. This changed in the 1980’s when demand and interest began to grow to have a Baptist congregation in this area once again. The Baptist congregation in Alberton realized to have their congregation thrive and continue to grow, they would need to set up permanent roots.

On March 30, 1999 five options were presented to the church to consider in regards to some possibilities for new buildings and new properties. At that time, the church asked the committee to bring a recommendation. On August 3, 1999, the building committee brought a report back to the church and recommended that the church buy the David Clark property, which consisted of a house and over two acres of land. First, however, sufficient funds would have to be secured. The church would need to raise $25,000 in three weeks so that the mortgage would not be over $500.00 per month. The church would, then, rent out the manse for $500.00 per month to cover the mortgage. A vote was taken, and the church voted to move ahead with this recommendation.

The congregation initially met in the homes of parishioners, until in June 2009 the Alberton United Baptist Church congregation once again opened its doors. This building is atypical for its time in terms of style and architectural embellishments. It embodies the trend of facilities making their building longer and wider than it is tall. Some of the most eye-catching architectural features of this building are the three pilasters, found on each corner on the main body of the structure, the curved windows, with river-rock embellishments surrounding them, and the classical style carport housing the main entrance.

<text>The congregation of the Alexandra Baptist Church was formed in 1831. For the first seven years meetings were held in private homes, until 1838 when a church was built and dedicated. From a beginning of fifteen members the church membership increased for several years but began to decline and by 1865 there were only nine members. Rev. E. N. Archibald came as an evangelist and the work revived and grew steadily under his leadership. At first the church was associated with Belfast and Uigg, but later joined with Hazelbrook, and remained so for many years.

Hazelbrook was known as the “Highland Church” by locals, referring to the settlers that came from the Highlands of Scotland and settled in the area. The Alexandra congregation was referred to as the “Lowlanders” and the “Lowland Church.” Eventually these congregations separated, and the Hazelbrook building was demolished.

In 1895, the original log cabin style meeting house that the congregation used, burned, leading to the construction of the church in 1895. This church was originally a rather plain and uncluttered wood frame structure, with the gable end facing the road. The steeple is uniquely positioned on the side edge, near the corner of the church. The steeple is low and is roughly the same height as the peak of the main structure’s roof. The steeple contains the main entrance and has unique, pie-shaped stained glass that appears to be original to 1895. Although the building has had some modern enhancements since its construction, the building still maintains many of its original features and architectural embellishments, such as the wooden finial on the top of the steeple, wooden trim, and wooden pews.

Some additions to the building include wood panelling added in the 1970’s, a front addition that was added in 2000, and the middle pews taken out and replaced with modern chairs.

Information was provided by the church and Frank Sinnott, History of the Baptists of Prince Edward Island, 1974.</text>

<text>The construction of a church in Allendale was thanks to the driving force of the women from the community. The funds for the construction of the meeting house in this community came from the sale of pies and tea parties, and by 1878 the building was erected as a Union Meeting House, shared by both the Baptist and Methodist congregations. The land that the church once stood on was donated by Asa and Margaret (Orchard) Hupman. Around 1890 the Methodists built their own church at the corner of Canada Hill road. When the building became solely a place of worship for the Baptist congregation it was rededicated January 13, 189, by Rev. N. B. Dun.

This church was much like the Baptist church in Osborne; it had an unusual mansard roof on the central tower, on the gable end. On the flat top of the tower was a decorative railing below which were small dormered openings in the belfry. The building was int the Gothic Revival style, and had pointed, arched windows, three on each side of the structure. Entry into the building was done through the arched doors located in either side of the bell tower. The structure had a chimney located on the side of the steeple pitched roof.

Part of the pastorate for this church included Osborne and Rockland Baptist Churches. these were known as “Gertie’s Churches” due to the energetic support shown by Gertrude Leslie for the upkeep of the building. The Allendale Baptist Church received a new bell April 5, 1953, which was donated by Leslie.

In 1972, due to dwindling membership attendance the building was sold, and later dismantled. The salvaged materials were used in the construction of a home in Green Harbour.

No photos of the building could be found, only of the pulpit that is now housed in the Jordan Falls United Baptist Church.</text>

<text><p>While the Alma Baptist Church congregation was established in 1859, this present structure (2022) wasn't built for another forty years in 1899.</p>
<p>While the church presents an asymmetrical profile from the street, it is actually symmetrical about the bell tower, an ell with the tower tucked into the inside of the ell. Eschewing Gothic for a more contemporary architectural style, the architect chose gabled windows for the church, each with a thin hood. At each gable peak, including those of the cross gabled belfry roof, is a sawn decorative panel with intricate scrollwork. The belfry itself has gabled vent openings all around, some now missing the same architectural detailings. On the peak of its roof stands a tall, thin, wood shingle clad spire with a ball finial, from which emanates the shaft of a weathervane.</p>
<p>The tower has four distinct sections: the bottom section ends at the sanctuary's eaves, with the sloping roof wrapping around it; the second section has gabled windows in two sides and ends at the belfry bottom with a wraparound eave; the third section is the belfry; while the fourth is the spire. In the sanctuary's gable peaks, behind the decorative panels, is a section of decorative diamond and truncated scalloped shingles atop a moulding with a gable shape or motif.</p>
<p>This church marks a transitional phase in Baptist church architecture around the turn of the twentieth century from a symmetrical design, usually in the Gothic Revival style, with a centrally placed steeple on the gable end, to an asymmetrical design with the steeple place usually on the side of the structure. Many of these churches, including Alma Baptist, with an asymmetrical design are also based on a modified “Akron Plan,” so named because it was first used in Akron, Ohio in 1867. This design abandoned the traditional long, straight, and narrow sanctuary with a central aisle in favor of a shallower and wider sanctuary with a sloping floor and pews which sweep in a half-circle and are broken into three sections. The purpose of these features was to enable everyone to see and hear clearly in a time when sound and projection systems were nonexistent.</p>
<p>This church has continued to maintain much of its original architectural embellishments and features that set this building apart from others in the region. Many character defining elements, such as the gingerbread detailing below the peak on the gable end and the detail on the steeple, are features found on no other building in the region. The building still holds its stained-glass windows, and the use of gothic 90-degree points can be found throughout this building, including the pointed windows and architectural embellishments on the facades of the structure.</p>

<text><p>Alton Baptist Church, at North Alton, originally met in the North Alton Community Hall, located at the southwest corner of Hwy 12 and English Mountain Road. A new church and parsonage were constructed in 1975. The basement space has rooms for Sunday school hall, group meeting rooms and washrooms. An addition called the ARC (Alton Recreational Centre) was added in 1999 with Randy Aalders doing most of the carpentry work. This addition includes a gymnasium-multi-purpose room with a stage, a kitchen, an office, and washrooms.</p>
<p>Today (2022), Alton Baptist Church is a congregation that meets in two locations; one in South Alton and the other in North Alton. This church is in North Alton and was formerly known as the North Alton Baptist Church. Originally, Blue Mountain was part of this pastorate, prior to the congregation's name change to ‘Alton Baptist Church’.</p>
<p>This structure rather plain and atypical for its time in terms of style. It is a single storey structure with a basement. The front entrance on the gable end, is set up high off the ground. Above the front entrance is a yellow-colored cross, set between the doors and the vent, near the peak of the roof. This building is a wood frame construction with a medium pitched roof. The building contains few architectural details or embellishments on the exterior, which is typical for its time. This building, although relatively new in terms of age, resembles an early style of church known as the meeting house style, a common style among Baptists in the early to mid-nineteenth century in Atlantic Canada. This style is often characterized by its small and rather plain facility, with no steeple, and gothic embellishments. The front entrance was often on the gable end, with either two entrances one on the left and right sides of the front façade, one meant for the men and the other for women; or a centrally placed doorway.</p>
<p>The front entrance protrudes from the front façade. Near the front of the building, on the peak of the roof, there is a metal, saddleback steeple, original to the building. On the left side of the front entrance is a black, stone cornerstone. The basement is used for recreational space, along with the addition on the rear of the structure. This church is covered in white vinyl siding and asphalt shingles; both materials are original to the building’s construction.</p>
