Historical Information
The Old Free Baptist Church is a small, white, wooden structure built in the modest classical style typical of a rural religious meeting house. It is located on a mature lot near the curb of Juniper Street in Florenceville-Bristol. A graveyard is visible at the rear of the building. With its simple rectangular massing, all-over symmetry, medium pitch gabled roof, and simple wooden ornamentation, the Old Free Baptist Church is a fine example of a village meeting house. Few exterior modifications have been made to the building since its construction in 1922. Ziba Lockhart (1881-1978), a local personality who made a considerable contribution to the religious life of the former Village of Bristol and who served as pastor for over 50 years, personally supervised the construction of the meeting house. The church was active until approximately 1978 and is now formally recognised as a Local Historic Place.

Historical description edited for brevity from: Canada's Historic Places.

Historical Information
With expansion and upkeep needed in the historic downtown location of
East Florenceville Baptist Church, and little land available, it was decided to build a new church in Florenceville in the 1980's.

A Baptist church congregation has existed in Florenceville-Bristol since the early part of the nineteenth century. The first congregation would have met and had a church in East Florenceville. The building would have been built no later than the 1820's and was in the meeting house style, a common style among Baptists in early to mid ninetieth century Atlantic Canada. This style is often characterized by its small and rather plain facility, with no steeple, and gothic or neo-classical embellishments. The front entrance was often on the gable end, with either two entrances on the left and right sides of the front façade; one meant for the men and the other for women, or a centrally placed doorway.

In 1838 a Free Christian Baptist Church was built in downtown Florenceville. In 1863 land was purchased on the west side of the river and a new church was built. In 1866 the Florenceville

Baptist Church was organized in West Florenceville as a member of the Regular Baptist denomination. This building still stands but has not been used since the 1970's.

In 1905-06 the denominations of Regular and Free Christian Baptists joined together to form the United Baptist Convention (now Canadian Baptists of Atlantic Canada). The two East Florenceville churches combined and rebuilt in downtown Florenceville (1912-1913 and 1939 after a fire on February 10, 1938). Included in the original United Baptist Church field (early 1900's) was Connell, Florenceville (West), East Florenceville, and Bristol.

In the 1940's services in Connell were discontinued and the West side church discontinued services in the 1970's with parishioners travelling across the river to East Florenceville. It was in the late 1970's that Bristol and Florenceville Baptist Churches became separate fields.

With expansion and upkeep needed in the downtown location and little land to be found, it was decided to build a new church in Florenceville in the 1980's. The current location (2021) of the congregation is on Burnham Road, which was built and dedicated in March of 1989 as the Florenceville United Baptist Church (which later became the Florenceville Baptist Church in 2001). The building has been added to twice- once in 2002 and again in 2010.

In September 2005 it was decided by both the congregations of Florenceville Baptist Church and Bristol Baptist Church that the two would amalgamate to one church. The Bristol Baptist Church joined the Florenceville Baptist Church at the Burnham Road location.

As the church serves the communities surrounding Florenceville-Bristol they came to the realization that they are no longer just Florenceville Baptist Church but a Baptist church including many communities. In 2014 they began discussing the need to incorporate and as such choose a legal name. Since the congregation is not made up of people from just Florenceville or just Bristol it was decided that a neutral name would be chosen, and True North Baptist Church was agreed upon. The church began operating under that name on January 1, 2017.

The church in East Florenceville appears to be built in the Gothic Revival style, with some additionsto the front façade such as the small one storey entranceway with a classical style round hooded window. The original windows on the building are Neo-Classical in design and feature hooded brow trim boards, a unique architectural feature of the building.

The West Florenceville Baptist Church is a prime example of Classical/Romanesque architecture with its temple pediment form supported by decorative pilasters, medallion window in the centre of the front façade, and saddle-back steeple situated within the main structure of the church, rather than protruding outwards. This church is a prime example of early Classical architecture. It exemplifies the transitional phase of Atlantic Canadian Baptist architecture from meeting house to country church.

The facility built in 1989 is atypical for its time in terms of style. It features few architectural embellishments, a high pitched roof, vinyl siding and vinyl windows, as well as a metal, saddle-back steeple. There are some hints of classical architecture with many of the rooflines being at a 45-degree angle, and the pillars on the drive-thru car port. This style of church exemplifies the

transition Atlantic Canadian Baptist congregations were making from having solely a building for worship, to a space that can be used for multi-purposes with a gymnasium, kitchen, office space. This church facility is used for more than just Sunday worship services; it is a place for people to gather every day of the week.

Historical Information

In 1832 the Free Christian Baptist Conference was formed in New Brunswick and in 1838, a church was built in the centre of the Florenceville on the east side of the river. This land was deeded March 22, 1838 for the sum of five shillings. Measuring 10 rods by 10 rods, it included property for the church and cemetery and is located at 8746 Main Street.

In the Union of 1905-06, three streams of Atlantic Baptists came together to form the United Baptist Convention of the Maritime Provinces. In the Florenceville-Bristol area, four churches formed a field, sharing a pastor and a parsonage – Florenceville United Baptist Church (west), East Florenceville United Baptist Church, Bristol United Baptist Church, and Connell United Baptist Church.

In 1912, the East Florenceville church was in need of many repairs so the United Baptists of East Florenceville began constructing a new building on the same site. The building was dedicated in April 1913, costing $5000. In 1920, a furnace and basement were added.

The building burned on February 10, 1939 and a new building was completed by November 1939. Many believed the new building was relatively plain and cheap in comparison to the original grandeur of the previous building, but with only $4000 of insurance funds to work with, it was impossible to match what the building had been before the fire.

In the late 1950s, a large side room was added to the north side of the building. In 1968, a large vestibule was added to the west side of the building. At the same time, the basement was completely remodelled, including moveable wooden-panelled partitions for Sunday School classrooms, tile floor, washroom, kitchenette, and a new oil furnace.

In the early 1970s the sanctuary was remodelled. The upper section of the north wall of the original building was removed and a sliding partition was added so it opened into the side room to be used as an overflow during services.

The building was decommissioned on February 26, 1989. It was sold for $42,000 to McCain Foods and used for their Traffic Department.

In March 1989, the congregation moved to a new location on Burnham Road where it still meets today as True North Baptist Church.

Historical Information

In the mid 19th-century, Several members of the Centreville Baptist Church felt a need for a Baptist Church in Florenceville. The land was purchased for 25 pounds and the Florenceville Baptist Meeting House was dedicated June 26, 1864.

The church was organized June 30, 1866 as a member of the Baptist Convention of the Maritime Provinces with 15 members. A new platform was built in 1901. The church bell was purchased April 11, 1904 for $106.53 from Meenly Company, West Troy, NY.

Due to declining congregational numbers by the mid-1970s and with the main commercial centre being on the east side of the river, services were discontinued. The church body still continued to exist with its own members, but the congregation joined with East Florenceville for services. In 1988, the two churches officially amalgamated under the name Florenceville United Baptist Church at Burnham Road (now known as True North Baptist Church).

The building still stands today and is owned by the Florenceville Baptist Church. It is the oldest church building in Florenceville-Bristol.

Historical Information

In the summer of 1853, ten years after the organisation of Centreville Baptist Church, the first meeting house was erected and dedicated in August. An addition to the church was built and dedicated on December 23, 1871. On February 14, 1905, a business meeting was called to make plans for a new church building.

The new church was completed in 1906 and cost $6000 to build, not including four memorial windows worth between $700-$800, which were donated. The building contains a vestry, a large room over the vestry, a tower room (used as a classroom), and a pastor’s room beside the main audience room and choir above. The main audience room seats two hundred and fifty adults and can be enlarged to hold three hundred and fifty people by opening up the vestry’s Akron-style rolling partitions.

The building was finished with steel throughout and was originally heated with steam. An eight-foot basement lies beneath the whole church and contains a steam furnace and piping, cistern and dressing room. The baptistry, which lies to the right of the pulpit platform, is decorated with an oil painting of an eastern scene from the Valley of Jordan by E.P. Cliff of Fredericton. Dedication of the new church building took place on January 14, 1906 and is still used by Centreville Baptist Church today.

On January 14, 1969, the Christian Education Centre was dedicated. The addition to the original building contains eight classrooms, a nursery, ladies’ parlour, kitchen, pastor’s study and fellowship hall, which was also designed for sports activities.

Currently, the sanctuary is used for church services and the rest of the building is used by Centreville Day Care.

Historical Information

Bristol Baptist Church was organized on April 24, 1894, and a church building was constructed in 1902.

In the Union of 1905-1906, three streams of Atlantic Baptists came together to form the United Baptist Convention of the Maritime Provinces. In the Florenceville-Bristol area, four churches formed a field, sharing a pastor and a parsonage: Florenceville United Baptist Church (west), East Florenceville United Baptist Church, Bristol United Baptist Church, and Connell United Baptist Church.

In the late 1970s, East Florenceville and Bristol became independent, no longer sharing a pastor and parsonage, with the mutual theme being ‘Divide and Multiply.’ At this time, the fair market value of the parsonage was assessed, and Florenceville bought out Bristol’s half to give their fair share of the equity.

In late Spring of 2005, the Bristol ministry was facing many limitations in their small, older building. It was agreed that Bristol Baptist Church and Florenceville Baptist Church could do more together than apart, functioning as a single ministry to a single community (discussions at the municipal level were also underway, and the official amalgamation to form the town of Florenceville-Bristol occurred in 2008).

In September 2005, the Bristol congregation held one final decommissioning service to recognize over a century of ministry. The sale of the Bristol parsonage on Route 107 plus the balance of any remaining funds were designated for future expansion of what is now True North Baptist Church. The Bristol United Baptist Church building was sold in 2009.

Historical Information

The Kirk was originally built by the Presbyterian congregation of Lower Southampton in 1890. The steeple bell was shipped to Millville by rail and moved to the church site by a team of horses pulling a sled prior to the consecration in 1903.

It is likely that in 1925, the Presbyterian Church became a United Church of Canada. It underwent extensive renovations in the 1950s and was moved to Landegger Drive in Nackawic in 1966. When the St. Anne-Nackawic Pulp and Paper Mill was built and the village established, the now United Church congregation eventually outgrew the building, which was then put up for tender.

Grafton Baptist Church purchased the building in December 1985. On February 26-27, 1986, the building was moved from Nackawic to Grafton. There were 14 trucks with hydro telephone linemen who disconnected the overhead wires along the way as the church was moved.

A sod-turning ceremony was held on May 19, 1986. A basement was poured at the Grafton site to provide facilities for Sunday School classes, meetings and Bible Study. The sanctuary seats just over 100, and when it was moved to Grafton, the church was furnished by items purchased from the Lower Cambridge United Baptist Church.

Funds raised through a special offering at the dedication went towards a ‘Dedication Project’ to construct a new entry, including a cloakroom and second stairway to the basement. Other projects in the first year included the completion of the basement, which made space for a fully equipped kitchen, a social area, and a washroom.

The church is now known as Grafton Baptist Church.

Historical Information

In 1869 the government granted 100 acres of land to Knowlesville Baptist Church. Once the land was cleared, the frame was made of timbers hewn by hand. The sides were boarded and the roof was finished with hand-shaved shingles. Seats were simply planks placed on blocks of wood.

In 1911, a new cement foundation was added. In the 1920s, a bell from Hartland was installed for call to worship – the same bell is used today. The 70th anniversary of the church was held in 1932. Most people at that time travelled to church by horse and it was decided to build a 60’ x 22’ horse shed.

In 1947 the church underwent a restoration inside and out. In 1968, a Sunday School room was added in part of the church basement. That year, each family from the congregation donated two gallons of paint and helped to repaint the church.

In 1982 an extension of three Sunday school rooms, an office and a bathroom were added, as well as an electric furnace in the main auditorium. In 1987 the church was re-panelled, padded seats were installed, and carpet laid throughout.

Historical Information

The area around Peel was first settled in the 1790s but the first church was organised on Saturday, July 14, 1804 by Reverend Joseph Crandall. The congregation met in log homes and had various preachers visit and speak to them through the years.

The Union Meeting House was built and dedicated in June 1897. In May of 1901, following a theological dispute, it was decided that a new church would be built to house a congregation of Calvinist Baptists.

A building site was needed, and it so happened the most desirable location belonged to a businessman with little interest in church. He refused to sell the land, but the committee communicating with him regarding the sale of the land consisted of a young lady who was very persistent in her entreaties. He informed her the only possible terms by which she could get the land was to kiss him on the mouth. It is unclear what actually happened, but the next morning the ground was staked off and the building material gathered.

In the summer of 1901 the windows were put into the Baptist Church. On June 4, 1903, the church was dedicated. In 1905, following the union of Baptists in the Maritimes, the Peel Church became Peel United Baptist Church.

On September 23, 1945, the church was rededicated after being painted inside and out. During the summer 1948, a basement was built, and the church moved the week of December 12th.

Peel United Baptist Church celebrated its 100th anniversary on Saturday June 28, 2003.

Historical Information
In 1851, Mark Tracey offered a building lot and use of his mill to saw lumber for a church. In one week, the men of the church had a structure in place. David Tracey provided use of his shingle mill and church was shingled in the spring of 1852.

When it was no longer needed, the church building was sold to Squire Mills , who moved it up the road and used it as a store. Later, the building was moved to Centreville and used as a shoe shop.

In 1868 Mark Tracey once again donated a building lot for the church that stands today, along with a piece of land for a cemetery.

The building had a seating capacity of 400, but over time many seats were removed to make space for classrooms. Around 1892, the walls were sealed, and the ceiling was coated. Following the death of church member Perry Perkins $1000 was willed to the church, and it was used to install an oil furnace.

In January 1965 the church was rededicated following the redecoration of the sanctuary.
