Historical Information

The Willow Grove Baptist Church was built in 1875 and opened in 1878 by the Reverend Edmund H. Duval. This church is located in Simonds Parish, New Brunswick; however, Willow Grove was formerly known as the African Grant, due to the large number of African refugees that received grants in the region.

A Deacon of Germain Street Baptist Church, Saint John, in 1870 Edmund H. Duval received a certificate of licence to preach from that congregation. He fought to improve social conditions for the descendants of Black Loyalists, particularly those living at Loch Lomond, also known as Willow Grove, located near Saint John. To better assist blacks at Willow Grove, he bought a farm there and taught residents farming techniques. He was instrumental in the construction of Willow Grove Baptist Church in the 1870s, which was considered a mission of Germain Street Baptist Church.

This church was constructed in the Victorian Gothic Revival style. Some of the most striking exterior features of this church included the eyebrow label mouldings over the rounded tops of the windows, on either side of the structure. The building had a centrally placed doorway on the gable end. Some of the most striking features of the front façade were the three finials, one on either side of the roof, near the ends and one centrally placed on the peak. This feature was typical of the Victorian Gothic Revival structures. Each of these finials on the sides of the building had corner pilaster boards, resembling large ornate columns. Another interesting feature was the medallion window situated near the peak and the large window situated above the doorway. The building had a steeply pitched roof, typical for its time in terms of style. It is unknown when this church was destroyed, but a small, shed sits where the church once stood.

Historical Information

In 1885, Seth Milberry donated land to build a church on this site; in 1906 a building was dedicated on the site. On October 20, 1906, the church was organized as the Wicklow United Baptist Church by Rev. L.A. Fenwick & Rev. Charles Sterling. It is unknown what happened between 1906 and 1920; however, interest in the church appeared to have diminished and the building’s fate was uncertain. On August 12, 1920, the church, with renewed interest, reopened following extensive repairs ($1,544.00).

Currently the church resembles those built in the Meeting House style, a common style among Baptists in early to mid-nineteenth century Atlantic Canada. This style is often characterized by its small and rather plain facility, with no steeple, and gothic embellishments. The front entrance was often on the gable end, with either two entrances, one on the left and right sides of the front façade, one meant for the men and the other for women; or a centrally placed doorway. In this case there are two doorways, giving a hint to the type of mindset the original congregation had.

Originally this church has a large steeple situated on the left side of the front façade. It is likely that this was removed during the extensive repairs around 1920. The steeple and the rest of the building were constructed in the Gothic Revival style, which was common for Baptist churches of its time. The steeple appears to have originally had an open-cage belfry situated just below the spire and would have contained a bell. The main entrance was originally located on the front side of the steeple, and with its removal the doors were repositioned the middle of the front façade. In 2018 a one-level addition was constructed on the front of the building, as well as a side doorway, near the corner of the front façade. When the church had this addition constructed, it once again altered the look and the front façade of the church.

Original structure built 1881 – 1885
New building - dedicated April 2021
Historical Information
The original building of Woodstock Baptist Church is designated a local historic place for its architecture and for its association with the history of the Baptist Church in Woodstock.
Built between 1881-1885 to replace the Free Christian Baptist Church that burned in the fire that destroyed much of Woodstock’s downtown in 1881, the present structure was originally designed in the Gothic Revival style by notable Saint John architect D. E. Dunham. The building has undergone some structural modifications that have altered its original appearance, most notably a major enlargement of the building in 1907, necessitated by the amalgamation of the various Baptist denominations in Woodstock. This renovation was designed by another prominent Saint John architect, H. H. Mott. His modifications added more Classical elements to the original design. The result is a rare blend of Gothic and Classical architecture in Woodstock.
When lightning struck the steeple in 1966, the 130-foot tower was pulled down and capped. The original tall Gothic stained-glass windows were removed for the installation of two ornate
memorial stained-glass windows.
Woodstock United Baptist Church is also designated as a symbol of the history of the Baptist faith in Woodstock. The Baptist denomination in Woodstock dates to 1834. The congregation
quickly grew but was plagued by divisions over minor points of dogma; by the late 1800’s there were several Baptist churches in the downtown area. In 1906, with the formation of the United
Baptist Convention of the Maritime Provinces, the churches amalgamated as the Woodstock United Baptist Church, choosing this site as their house of worship. The original building continues to stand at 694 Main Street; however, a new facility at 785 Main Street serves the church today.

Historical Information
The First Baptist Church congregation was first organized May 3, 1895 and later dedicated this building 1898. In 1895 Benjamin Jewett donated a plot of land for the construction of a church; the following year work commenced. This church remained by itself until 1905 when it joined in union with the Free Baptist Church to create the Hartland United Baptist Church. Services for this congregation were held in the Calvinist Church until it caught fire and burned October 16th, 1963.
The last pastor at this church prior to union was Rev. Caleb T. Phillips, and the first pastor after the union was Rev. A. F. Baker. The fire in the church is believed to have been caused by tar on the stove in the kitchen of the basement boiling over at the time the roof was being repaired.
Prior to union and a new congregation being formed, this church was a rather plain and uncluttered structure. The church was Gothic Revival in style, which was typical of many country churches of its time. The church has a three-bay façade with a centrally placed open cage bell tower on the gable end. It has a large centrally placed doorway with gothic mouldings and trim boards above and one large gothic window on either side. It also has a medium sized medallion window in the centre of the belltower, just below the open cage belfry. One of the most eye-catching features of this church is the trim boards and the front façade. Marking the central bay are two pilasters with a large, pointed top, mimicking the shape and style of the central bell tower. Another eye-catching feature is how the façade is relatively uncluttered; each side has four gothic shaped windows as well as three single and two double windows visible on the basement level.
In the early 1920’s the church structure was altered and had a large addition added to it; the additions included an annex, baptistry, choir platform and eight new Sunday school classrooms. These additions are visible on either side of the main structure and copied the architecture of the main structure to blend in seamlessly as if they had always been there.
The building was destroyed by fire.

Historical Information
The Free Baptist Church was the first church to be constructed in Hartland, and the congregation was first organized in 1843. For the years prior to this church being constructed the members of the congregation met at various parishioners’ homes. The construction of this Baptist place of worship took so long because some difficulties that arose; members withdrew and formed other Christian denominations.
On Christmas Day 1875 this church was dedicated, and was said by locals in the area to be a dominating edifice on the lower end of Main St in Hartland.
The Free Christian Baptist Church at Hartland (then called The Mouth of the Guimac), as it was called when they first formed in 1843 was under the guidance and leadership of Rev. G. W. Orser, who was pastor for over 30 years.
This church was known as the Free Baptist Church, until its union in 1905 with the First Baptist Church (Calvinist Church) creating the United Baptist Church of Hartland.
Soon after this union there were very few activities held at this church and little need for both properties. In 1915 this building was sold to Scott Sipprelle who made the structure into an apartment with a blacksmith shop and garage on street level (believed to be the first car garage in Hartland). Five years later, in 1920, the building was again sold, to a man named Elisha Shaw who turned the building into a furniture store. The building passed through many different owners until it was sold to the N. B. Seed Growers CO-OP who decided to demolish the structure on August 6th, 1973. Photos and videos were taken during the building’s demolition as each section was cut and hauled away.
Architecturally this building was said to have been built without nails and was made from 10” x 10” wooden hand-hewn beams, held together with wooden pegs. The building is Greek Revival in style with its front gable roof and return eaves with large double hung windows. The building has a three-bay façade with a centrally placed square belltower with a flat roof, spires on each corner and decorative wooden trim boards on the top. It is unique that this church originally did not appear to have windows in the front of the building on except for on the bell tower. Windows on each side of bell tower appear to have been added later.

Structure built in 1964
Historical Information
The congregation that makes up the Hartland United Baptist Church has its origins with two congregations that are older than the structure they worship in today. The Free Baptist Church was organized in 1843 and later began constructing their first place of worship in 1871, with construction ending four years later and the building being dedicated December 25, 1875.
In May 1906 the Free Baptist Church and the Calvinist church united to become the United Baptist Church. Services for this congregation were held in the Calvinist Baptist Church and Free Baptist Church was primarily only used for its lower-level parsonage for Sunday School and other activities.
The Calvinist Baptist Church (built 1890) burned October 16, 1963 and on August 6, 1974 the Free Baptist Church (built 1871) was torn down. This led to the construction of the current Hartland United Baptist Church. This church is like other churches of its time, built in the mid-century modern/modernism style. The large, thin and tall spire on the medium pitched roof is an atypical architectural feature from this era. Large windows on the gable end of the structure are also one of the most eye-catching features of this structure. There is a large extension to the left of the main structure, believed to house recreational space, spaces for Sunday School and offices for the leaders of the church.

Historical Information

Property for the church was purchased in 1867. The church building, which measured 52’x45’ and had 10’ posts and two front doors, was constructed by John Mallory, John DeWitt, and Charles VanWart.

Two aisles led from the doors to the platform. The original seats were used until 1979, when they were given to another church and replaced with padded pews.

Kerosene lamps were used to light the church until the 1920s when they were sold and replaced with gas chandeliers. Although they gave much better light than the kerosene lamps, the chandeliers had to be lowered several times during a service so that oxygen could be pumped into the chamber.

Tall cylinder stoves stood on either side of the doors. At least two cords of wood were needed to warm the church for services throughout the winter. In 1943-44, an oil furnace and electric lights were installed.

The first open horse sheds often blew over and broke up in the nearby creek. In 1903, Joseph Estabrooks built a 100’ shed with two double doors facing the road and smaller doors on each end. The construction included ‘Tamarack Knees,’ naturally curved roots used as braces and joints. In 1946, the shed was sold and moved.

Around 1940, tall windows topped with triangular stained-glass panes were installed.

Smith and Cummings built the church basement in 1960. In 1965, the platform was enlarged; the furnace was moved from the front end of the basement to the back; the floor was tiled; veneer was put on the walls; and the stairway to the basement was remodelled.

In 1970, new storm doors and windows were installed. In February 1978, Wendall Everett drew the plans for a steeple which was built by Sonny Sharkey later that summer. A set of double front doors were installed beneath. The walls were insulated, drywalled and topped with oak panelling. A cathedral ceiling was built. During this time, a well was also dug, and a kitchen and washrooms were installed.

In 1985 an addition was built on the back of the church to house a Baptistry, a larger platform and choir area, and two Sunday School rooms. Downstairs, a lounge, office, pastor’s study, and nursery were finished and furnished. Both Sunday School rooms were carpeted and dividing doors installed.

In September 1990, a new asphalt roof was put on. Wendall Everett, Gary Everett and Kenny Anderson built the addition to the front of the church in July and August of 1992. It included a much roomier entryway, and an additional room which at different times down through the years has been used as a classroom, a sound room, and is presently the pastor’s study. A room in the basement for the youth was also constructed, as well as a wheelchair ramp to the front door.

In 2017, Waterville United Baptist Church celebrated its 150th anniversary. As a special project for this landmark occasion, the congregation raised money and bought upholstered chairs for the sanctuary to replace the orange upholstered pews.

Information graciously gathered and provided by Joyce Cummings, Assistant Clerk, Waterville United Baptist Church
